A furnace makes noise when something is out of balance — mechanically, electrically or in the combustion process. The specific sound narrows the problem down fast.
A delayed boom on start-up is the one to take seriously. It usually means gas is pooling in the burner box before ignition, and that points at a dirty burner, a weak ignitor or a partially blocked flue. Shut the system off and call us.
A high-pitched squeal is almost always the blower motor bearings or a slipping belt on older units. It's not dangerous, but it is a countdown. A rattle that shows up only while the blower runs is typically loose sheet metal on the return, and it can be fixed in minutes.
Rapid clicking at the thermostat with no start-up means the control board isn't getting a call, or a safety switch has locked the unit out. Rolling out the fault code from the diagnostic LED tells us which before we ever open a panel.
